This is a picture of me and my youngest brother, Chance - the one who contributed photographs to #TheReluctantOwlet. If you look closely, you'll see that I'm holding a library book in my hand. I still remember that book (a biography of Helen Keller), and I remember lying there against that big pillow, lost in the book, while waiting for my mother to call us to dinner.
.
I remember picturing everything in the book so vividly, and my own imaginative experience being juxtaposed by the realization that Helen Keller couldn't hear or see what I was hearing and seeing in my mind. It was such an intense reading experience.
.
I've always felt that using the senses while reading is so important. That's why I believe in using real books as much as possible when teaching children how to read. I think it's so important to touch the books. To smell them. To listen to the sound of the pages turning.
.
And when children are reading, it's so helpful to remind them to stop and close their eyes, thinking about what they just read. Can they hear the sounds the author described? Can they see the sights? Smell the scents?
.
Think of Helen Keller - that her world opened up when Anne Sullivan helped her connect the feeling of water on her hands with the word W-A-T-E-R. Her senses - even without sight or hearing - were her gateway to communication and literacy.
.
Our senses are such a gift to us, yet it's so easy to disconnect from them. Help your kids make that connection between feeling, hearing, smelling, seeing, tasting....and READING. Check out the latest Little Owl Literacy video on YouTube today!

Have you ever been afraid to try something new? To go someplace you've never been? To leave the comfort of what's familiar to you?
.
That's what my children's book, The Reluctant Owlet, is all about. I've just finished creating the trailer video for the book and I'm so tickled with the way it turned out. I would love for you to watch it if you have a few minutes. (The link is in my profile.)
.
I wanted to write something that would inspire young children to be brave and take a leap into the unknown. You never know what will happen. In fact, I'm mid-leap, myself, these days. I have no idea where I'll land, but I'm enjoying the feeling of spreading my wings, even when things get scary.
.
I hope you love the video, and that Vesper's story gives you courage. Happy reading!

As a writer, artist, and photographer, I think about the power of words and images often. Everything that we do and say affects this world. When you put every ounce of your attention on beauty, it can feel so good. That's why, I believe, we are so nourished by poetry, by art, by good cinematography. Especially in today's world, where we are bombarded with hate, judgment, and fear.
.
I've been thinking a lot about the beauty of poetry and how necessary it is to our world, since Mary Oliver's death on January 17th. Wouldn't she be thrilled, I've imagined, to see us fill the world with beautiful words, the way she did?
.
We could be like the poet army described in Tori Amos's song, The Battle of Trees. "The power of the poet in ancient Ireland is something we don't understand," she said. Just looking at the destructive power of the words of our world today, though, gives us a small insight into that power.
.
What if we started a poet army? Flung our beautiful words to every corner of the world - when speaking, or on Twitter, Facebook, our blogs, here on Instagram. Can you imagine what kind of impact we could make?

I'm so grateful to Denise at Key of Dee for letting me visit her blog again. Here's a bit of my story - click on the link in my profile to read more!

"By the age of 10, I was 100% certain of my destiny to become a writer. At the time, my parents decided to write a cowboy romance novel (a marriage of each of their favorite genres). They had decided to write under a pen name. They chose my first name and an old family name for their pseudonym: Yancy Johns.
.
They printed out business cards using that pen name; underneath the name was the word writer. They had one of the business cards laminated and attached it to their new typewriter. When I looked at that card and saw my name and the word writer, I knew that was my destiny."
