The Poison Box - An audio Excerpt
Thirty-three years ago,
the street upon which she now walked had been but a dirt road, unnamed, unmarked, cutting its way through the orchard from north to south. She had never seen that road or those trees, having arrived in Salome only eighteen years ago. She was not there to witness the razing of the trees, the apples dumped into the woods north of town, left to rot in the unapologetic urban expansion. Houses were built on barren fields where once the land had been striped with rows of apple trees. Aspens and maples were planted to assuage the barren landscape, for the new residents had no wish to look out their windows and find nothing green but the grass, no shade on summer days but that cast by neighbors’ houses.
